Paper and Plastic has created a comprehensive list of sustainability
initiatives. It is not based solely on the economic, social and
environmental factors, but on all factors in every phase of our
business.
By partnering with our suppliers and customers, we are focused on improving the environment for the future generations.
As a company we have made the following environmental changes to our organization:
Building
Our
new warehouse is well insulated and has low energy fluorescent
lighting. Light switches were installed that automatically shut-off
when there is no movement in the area for a set amount of time. This
provides us with the most environmentally friendly structure in our
community.
Used fluorescent lights are recycled. Used building materials from routine maintenance or site improvements are recycled.
Technology
Our highly systemized approach to business helps reduce paper consumption through electronic document solutions.
A new press has been purchased which facilitates greater efficiency, yielding reduced waste.
All
out-dated computers and accessories are properly and cleanly recycled.
None of our outdated electronic hardware goes to the land fill.
Constant
improvements in internet and communication technologies allow us to
improve our business functions with both customers and vendors resulting
in minimal travel expenditure. We also strive to provide telecommuting
opportunities which not only reduce the physical commute for employees
but also the physical commute for their children to/from daycare
Shipping and Logistics
Since
we are involved in the shipping of a variety of retail packaging
products, we strive to mix pack and to save packing materials wherever
possible.
All cases are placed on stackable pallets. This is the
most efficient utilization of truck capacity. The result is
substantially less fuel needed to deliver products from our warehouse.
In
response to changing conditions, we regionalize warehousing to provide
the most efficient distribution of goods across the continent.
Management
constantly reappraises shipping methods to optimize fuel efficiency,
e.g. sustituting rail for truck shipment when it presents a fuel
advantage.
Warehouse Recycling
Corrugated
and waste papers and bailed and recycled. Every paper component that is
not used in the shipping or product itself is recycled.
Obsolete materials and pallets are recycled.
Plastic packaging is recycled as well.
Community and Employment
We
hire and train students from our local high school co-op program. Our
training helps challenged students, who otherwise might not have the
skills, enter the work force after graduation.
Educational Support
This
year is the beginning of our summer co-op program width Ohio University
Business School. The students will work on various projects that will
prepare them for future business roles in and around our community.
